Spring into action

If the London Marathon has recently inspired a little more physical activity then join the club, Madano has also been active and getting in shape.

Health-conscious members of the team have been pounding the mean streets of Southwark, passing landmarks including Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and Southwark Cathedral; not to mention Borough Market with its tempting array of culinary delights and drinking establishments!

But while we have been benefitting from a bit of weight loss, improved circulations, slowing down the ageing process (important for some – you know who you are!), and reduced stress, the team have also used the direct connection with the streets to play with around with geotagging.

Armed with a camera and a GPS device, we took photos as we ran around the route. As each photo was taken, coordinates were automatically added to the photo.  Back in the office these were then uploaded to our Flickr account,  given a title and then added to a Google map.

The picture below now shows the route we took and each photo dropped into the appropriate location.

Because the map feeds of ‘live’ data from Flickr, as we add more photos they’ll appear on the map without any additional work.

While that has been a bit of fun, we also know that geotagging has a really useful future as communications tool for a myriad of purposes from helping to sell properties, to engaging with local stakeholders, managing the branding of retail outlets or sites, and even visualising the competition.
